First BTP game jam

I did not originally plan to join this game jam due to I had a little boy very recently (2 months today :) but I was able to find some time to create a small game.
It wasn't easy, when the theme was released I started to write down all my ideas I could come up with. Created a google docs (3 full pages at the end of the game jam!!)  To be honest I didn't like the theme that much, I think it was a bit too vague. I hoped that it would be like "Loading" or something when I watched the announcement video.
Anyhow when thinking about what to make and taking care of my baby boy I wanted to create a very small game. So a small puzzler would be cool I thought. I wanted some kind of board of maybe 10x10 where you should add different kind of access levels like "Protected, Public, Private" and then maybe throw in some mutable and immutable blocks.

So my initial thought were this. Have a simple board puzzling game. Where there were maybe a God throwing you the building blocks. Perhaps you can hit some "Random()" functions to randomise your board and loose points or whatever. And there should be a time limit to not be able to play for too long. And in the end you have "Created a game", so it should have been like a meta game.
To add some final touches to it I wanted it to be like Katamari Damacy, where the King is saying some fancy words whenever you do something.
As you might have guessed I didn't do that simple puzzler of a game. I tried to expand on this idea a bit more to have the blocks falling instead, randomly and you as a player are moving around in the field trying to not get crushed by the blocks. You were also able to destroy the blocks to be able to match the blocks you needed to get like three. But it got hard when the blocks that were falling didn't really have a logic and I didn't have a grid to be able to know which kind where in what position. I struggled a lot with this concept and almost throw in the towel.

Next I tried to tweak it a bit, make the boxes fall faster and also I draw some assets myself using Pyxel Edit, in hope of making my game more appealing. Also that I needed more motivation to get me through creating the game!

When I though I was stuck with this game and I could not continue. I went back to my idea board and was starting over.
Trying to focus on the theme, game development. What are one thing they (we) do? They create a game, testing the game. Eureka! I got it. I need to be the game developer and control my game I made with some buttons and input or similar.

I had a lot of ideas around this but in the end I did not have time to do everything. And as always its very easy to wanderer away and come up with A LOT of stuff that is just nice to have and not the MVP that is needed for such a short game jam! So I scratched a lot of features and focused on simple ones like spike bed and a button to "open" the room.

The final touches were sounds. I created a small tune in Bosca Ceoil that I feel pretty happy with, I am not a musician so I just did the best I could to make it sound some what good.

Looking back I was very pleased to still continue due to my loss of motivation mid way through the game jam. I really like game jams because they make you think of an idea relative quick and just start working. There is not time to procrastinate.

Note:
And for those of you thinking I ignored my baby and focused on creating a game, that is not true. My very first focus and priority was him and then while he was sleeping or the mother was taking care of him I could get some time to code :)
